Unload your coins at Coinstar
I have this weird obsession of collecting my change in a big plastic container. But once it is brimming at the top and needs to be converted into paper bills instead of counting it, myself, I take it to Coinstar and let the machine do all the work for me.
The last time I used Coinstar I redeemed over 2800 pennies for a $28 ecertificate to Amazon. That doesn’t seem like a lot of money but I wasn’t even going to consider the alternative. I loathed the thought of sitting, counting, and rolling that many pennies. For me it was the easiest and quickest way to turn change into something more valuable.
If you choose to receive cash as your pay out, the service fee is 9.8 cents per dollar but if you choose an ecertificate there are no fees. Ecertificates include shops for, Amazon, Old Navy, Lowes, JCPenney, Starbucks, Toys R Us, and much more.
Here is a picture of a random freebie I received from Coinstar about one year ago. It is a felt bag to throw your lose change in encouraging you to take it to one of their machines. I use it to keep my bills in it until I am ready to pay them.

As an aside, I have read articles from economists who predict that not so far in the distant future, coins and paper bills will be obsolete. Coins in particular can be cumbersome to carry around but even more so, paper bills are filthy and can carry bacteria that can potential harm handlers who come in contact with them. I wonder what will be come of Coinstar? Thoughts on this subject?

A penny for my thoughts
Whenever I find money on the ground, whether it be paper money or even a nickle, I will pick it up. If it happens to be a penny and my husband is with me he always says, “Oh, it is just a penny!”. Well to me it is not just a penny. The significance runs deeper.
Whenever I spot change that someone has dropped or purposefully discarded, I pick it up, think of my Grandma, and take a moment to thank her for it. Actually it is not just a ritual I participate in but my father, mother, and even my sister all thank her for our finds.
My mom recently found $26 dollars crumpled up in the pocket of a pair of pants she bought at a thrift store and my sister found $10 while walking her dog near her house. I found a penny outside a grocery store the other day. (I think I got the raw end of the deal, comparatively speaking. Lol)
We all like to believe these random finds are signs from her because they represent what she was all about. She used coupons before you could print them from the internet. She even collected UPCs and store receipts to complete rebates before apps and smartphones existed to help with these tasks. I think in short, I have to thank my grandma for this frugal adventure that Jen and I are on.
